The PROMAGEN Study: Quality of life

A randomised controlled study shows supplementation of overweight and obese adults with Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria reduces bodyweight and improves wellbeing

SUMMARY

An exploratory, block-randomised, parallel, double-blind, single-centre, placebo-controlled superiority study with 220 overweight and obese adults with BMI 25-34.9. The probiotic group (110) took 50 billion Lab4P probiotics every day for six months and the placebo group (110) took an identical-looking placebo.

Significant improvements in Quality of Life scores of general wellness, health, energy and mood were observed in the overweight and obese adults supplemented with Lab4P probiotics.

Aim

This randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study aimed to assess the effect of 6-months’ supplementation with the Lab4P probiotic on body weight, plasma cholesterol and wellbeing in healthy overweight and obese individuals. The outcomes of the Quality of Life assessment are presented here.

Method

Results

  • Significant improvements in scores of State of Health (5.8%, *P< 0.05), State of Energy (5.5%, *P< 0.05) and State of Mood (5.1%,*P< 0.05) were observed at 3 months (Figure 1).
  • The Quality of Life assessment questionnaire covered these five areas; general wellness, state of health, state of energy, state of mood and sleep quality.
  •  6.3% significant improvement in General Wellness scores at 3 months (**P< 0.01) and 5.6% at 6 months (*P< 0.05) in the group supplemented with Lab4P probiotics (Group 2) compared to the placebo (Group 1).
  • Conclusion
